As designers, Sharon and Ted Burdett are animated by one guiding philosophy: “Design is a process of evolution.” They founded Strand Design in 2009 to create timeless, functional products “that bring people joy.”
Their Fourneau Bread Oven is a perfect distillation of that mission. As avid home bread-bakers, Sharon and Ted wanted to design a tool that would make it safer, easier, and more enjoyable for people of all skill levels to bake fresh bread at home. And “as designers, we always see problems as opportunities.” After much research, experimentation, and testing of materials, they came up with the design for Fourneau: a compact, durable, cast-iron oven, with a hatch that can safely release built-up baking steam.
True to their motto — “iterate, iterate, iterate” — Sharon and Ted decided to give the Fourneau an upgrade for Kickstarter Gold. The Fourneau Bread Oven 2.0 includes add-on components like a removable handle and non-stick baking mat, as well as a redesigned hatch and baking tray, all designed to help home bakers “make their best bread ever.”
Reflecting on the product-design process, Sharon and Ted say: “Risks and setbacks are inherent any time you try to do something new, but our love of the process keeps us motivated. Every challenge is a learning opportunity.” After all, “there is always more to learn” — about bread and product design.
